William Walter Merry

William Walter Merry (1835–1918) byl Angličtina klasický učenec, duchovní a pedagog.^[1]

Život

William Merry se narodil v roce Evesham, Worcestershire, a byl vzděláván u Cheltenham College a Balliol College, Oxford, kde získal Cenu kancléře za a latinský esej v roce 1858. Byl kolegou a lektorem Lincoln College v Oxfordu, z roku 1859 a Rektor (vedoucí) koleje z roku 1884.^[2] Byl vybraný kazatel na univerzitu v letech 1878–79 a 1889–90 a kazatel Whitehallu v letech 1883–1884; veřejnost řečník v Oxfordu od roku 1880 do roku 1910; člen Hebdomadalská rada (1896–1908); a Vicekancléř (1904–06).

Funguje

Po mnoho let se věnoval přípravě vydání klasických autorů, vydané nakladatelstvím Clarendon Press, Oxford.^[3] Mezi ně patří Homere je Odyssey (knihy i až xii, s James Riddell; druhé vydání, 1886); školní vydání stejných knih a další z knih xiii až xxiv;^[4] a série vydání her z Aristofanes, začalo v roce 1879. (Některá z nich prošla několika vydáními). Jeho další díla v klasické literatuře jsou Řecké dialekty (1875) a Vybrané fragmenty římské poezie (druhé vydání, 1901).
