Šerif z Yorkshire - Sheriff of Yorkshire

The Šerif je nejstarší sekulární úřad pod korunou. Dříve byl šerif hlavním policistou v kraji, ale v průběhu staletí byla většina odpovědností spojených s tímto postem přenesena jinam nebo nyní zanikla, takže její funkce jsou nyní do značné míry slavnostní.
Šerif je titul pocházející z doby Úhly, nedlouho po invazi do Anglické království, který existoval asi tisíc let.[1] Seznam šerifů z Normanské dobytí dále naleznete níže.[1][2] Shrievalties jsou nejstarší světský tituly pod korunou v Anglii a Walesu, jejichž účelem je zastupovat monarchu na místní úrovni, historicky v hrabství.
Kancelář měla v dřívějších dobách silné postavení, zejména v případě Yorkshire, který pokrývá velmi velkou plochu. Šerifové byli zodpovědní za údržbu zákon a pořádek a různé další role. Některé z jejich pravomocí v Yorkshire byly vzdány v roce 1547 jako Lord nadporučík z Yorkshire byl ustanoven k řešení vojenských povinností. Bylo to teprve v roce 1908 Edward VII Spojeného království že Lord Lieutenant se stal starší než šerif. Od té doby se pozice šerifa zvýšila slavnostní, přičemž mnoho z jejích předchozích povinností bylo přeneseno na Soudci vrchního soudu, soudci, koronery, místní úřady a policie.
V roce 1974, pod Zákon o místní správě z roku 1972 byla zrušena jediná Yorkshire shrievalty, přičemž každému novému byli jmenováni vyšší šerifové metropolitní a nemetropolitní kraje.[3] Dnes je pozice zastoupena na lokálnější úrovni ve formě čtyř titulů; the Vysoký šerif z East Riding of Yorkshire, Vysoký šerif ze severu Yorkshire, Vysoký šerif z South Yorkshire a Vysoký šerif ze západního Yorkshire.
