Rhinella, běžně známý jako Jihoamerické ropuchy, zobákové ropuchy nebo Rio Viejo ropuchy, je rod pravé ropuchy původem z Neotropické části Mexika a Střední a Jižní Amerika. Navíc třtinová ropucha byl představen v Austrálii, Karibiku a jinde.
Původně všechny druhy rodu Rhinella byly zahrnuty do rodu Bufo, pak byli rozděleni do rodů Chaunus a Rhamphophryne. Nicméně, Chaunus a Rhamphophryne jsou nyní zvažovány synonyma z Rhinella.[1]
Etymologie
- Rhinella znamená „malý nos“, od nosorožec- (ῥῑνο-), kombinující forma starořečtiny rhi (ῥίς(Dále jen „nos“) a latinka zdrobnělina přípona -ella.[2]
- Chaunus je latinizovaná forma starořečtiny chaûnos (χαῦνος, „Porézní, houbovitý“).[3][4]
- Rhamphophryne, což znamená „zobákovitá ropucha“, pochází z rhamphos (ῥάµϕος, 'zobák')[5] a phrunē (φρύνη„Ropucha“).[2]
