Stephanopis je rod krabí pavouci poprvé popsal Octavius Pickard-Cambridge v roce 1869.[2] Rod Stephanopis byl postaven pro pět nově popsaných druhů, včetně S. altifrons, z Austrálie.[3] Stephanopis byla charakterizována vysokou cefalickou oblastí s nestejně velkými předními očima (ALE většími než AME) umístěnými v silně zakřivené řadě, opisthosoma končící několika spiniformními projekcemi a dorzoventrálně depresivním habitusem.[4] Podle Pickard-Cambridge, jediný vzorek použitý pro popis S. altifrons byl suchý. Proto nemohl být vzorek řádně prozkoumán, takže nebylo možné určit, zda byl vzorek dospělý. Navíc uvádí svůj vlastní náčrt pavouka jako „unáhlený“. To může vysvětlovat, proč byly somatické postavy nedostatečně popsány, genitální rysy nebyly vůbec zmíněny a ilustrace nebyly dostatečně podrobné, takže druh byl neidentifikovatelný.[5]
