Washington a Lee University je veden a Prezident vybráno správní radou. Univerzita byla založena v roce 1749 jako Augusta Academy. Později se stala Liberty Hall Academy (1782), Washington Academy (1798), Washington College (1813) a nakonec Washington and Lee University (1871). Kancelář prezidenta byla vytvořena až v roce 1782.
