The Doehling – Heselton Memorial Trophy se každoročně uděluje vítězi Divize III vysoká škola Fotbal hra mezi Ripon College Red Hawks a Lawrence University Vikingové. Ripon-Lawrence soupeření je nejstarší soupeření školního fotbalu ve státě Wisconsin sahá až do roku 1893. Tato hra je 14. nejstarší rivalitou školního fotbalu v zemi.[1] Ripon má v řadě výhodu 65-46-7.
Dějiny
Série začala v roce 1893 vítězstvím Riponu 24-6 a školy se v sérii střídaly.
Zatímco Lawrence vlastnil ranou část seriálu, Ripon dominoval ve 20. a 30. letech. Lawrence byl nejlepším týmem ve čtyřicátých letech minulého století, zatímco týmy rozdělily sérii během padesátých let. Ripon měl opět převahu v 60. letech, ale Lawrence byl nejlepším týmem od poloviny 70. let do konce 80. let. Ripon je v současné době na nejdelší sérii vítězů v sérii s devatenácti po sobě jdoucími vítězstvími.[2]
Občas byla rivalita mezi školami brutální. Lawrentian v roce 1896 se obával, že soupeření je tak intenzivní, že fotbal může být jako sport zakázán. Jak komentátor poznamenal: „Takové hraní zabije fotbal ... Pokud Ripon nebo fotbal musí zemřít, je nám to líto, ale měl by to být Ripon.“[3] Článek v Appleton Post-Crescent poznamenal, že Vikingové by při svém vítězství 23: 6 v roce 1901 skórovali více, ale při dvou příležitostech „diváci potkali muže Lawrencea, kteří se dostali pryč, aby se dostali na čisté pole.“[4]
Oba týmy hrály o a putovní trofej během padesátých let známý jako „The Old Paint Bucket“. Pamětní trofej Doehling – Heselton byla založena v roce 1988 u příležitosti 25 let soupeření mezi nimi Carl Doehling, Trenér Ripon od roku 1924 do roku 1955 a Bernie Heselton, Trenér Lawrence od roku 1938 do roku 1964.[5]
Tradice
Po vítězství Vikingů nad Red Hawks zazvoní zvon v hlavní hale v areálu Lawrence. Zvonek se zvoní pouze třikrát ročně; druhý dvakrát Imatrikulace a Zahájení.
